What is a postpartum Doula?

A Postpartum Doula nourishes mama and her family during the first weeks and months after her little has arrived earthside. We help with newborn care and soothing, sibling adjustment, cooking, non medical support, and household organization. We offer evidence- based information on newborn feeding, as well as emotional and physical healing after birth. We have a vast local resource/referral list to help support families with anything and everything that is out of our scope of practice.

Many of us preparing for birth are spending valuable time creating our Birth Plan. What about a Postpartum Plan? MotherBird Wellness helps you create a postpartum support plan tailored to your unique needs. During our prenatal meeting we get to chat about how we can best serve you in the coming weeks and months after your little nugget is here. Each family is so special in how they need to be supported. We are so honored to support you in this journey.

why do i need a postpartum doula?

It used to be that many generations lived under one roof- grandmas, aunties, and sisters were all there waiting to welcome a new mama and her new baby into the world with sage advice. In the US, this experience is far from what many of us experience today. We often live far away from family and/or may not have that support to rely on. We may have amazing well meaning friends, but we do not know how to ask for the help that we need. We may have never even seen a woman breastfeed or have held a newborn before. All of these factors (including family history), can lead to feelings of isolation, lack of confidence, Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs.) 15-20% of women experience significant symptoms of depression or anxiety throughout their pregnancy and up to a year postpartum.

In many places around the world the first weeks after giving birth are a time for the mother to rest, heal, eat, sleep and feed the baby. And. That. Is. All. These traditions of Postpartum Confinement span across cultures and have been around for eons. Most of the traditions are based on the idea that the care given to a Mama/Newborn in the first 40 days can determine the next 40 years of health. This practice of using the first weeks/months to prioritize healing by creating a calm space where there are few household demands on the mother can decrease recovery time and potentially prevent PMADs, while promoting healthy milk production and immune systems for mama and babe. Allowing this ancient wisdom to inform and permeate our postpartum experiences today can lead to happy mamas, which leads to happy kids. And happy kids leads to a better world! YAY BABIES!!
